Discover Compa Mt Hawthorn

If you’ve ever wandered down Oxford Street in Mount Hawthorn looking for somewhere that feels equal parts polished and welcoming, Compa Mt Hawthorn at 406 Oxford St, Mount Hawthorn WA 6016, Australia, is the kind of spot that immediately draws you in. I stopped by on a Friday evening after hearing a string of glowing reviews from locals, and within minutes of sitting down, I understood why this neighbourhood diner has built such a loyal following.

The space strikes a balance between modern European bistro and relaxed suburban eatery. Warm lighting, timber finishes, and an open kitchen give it energy without feeling loud. You can watch the chefs plate up dishes with focused precision, which always adds a layer of confidence to the experience. According to hospitality research from organisations like the National Restaurant Association, diners consistently rank atmosphere and service quality as key drivers of repeat visits. Compa clearly understands this; the vibe is upbeat yet comfortable, making it just as suitable for a casual weeknight dinner as for a celebratory meal.

Let’s talk about the menu, because that’s where Compa really shines. The offerings lean Mediterranean with strong Italian influences, but there’s a distinctly Western Australian touch in the produce. On my visit, I tried their house-made pasta paired with seasonal vegetables and locally sourced seafood. Western Australia is known for premium produce, and chefs across the region often highlight sustainability and freshness as priorities. You can taste that commitment here. The flavours are bold without being overwhelming, and the textures are carefully considered. It’s not just cooking; it’s thoughtful execution.

A friend ordered one of their signature steaks, cooked precisely to medium-rare. The process is worth noting: resting the meat properly after grilling ensures even distribution of juices, something many casual diners overlook. Food science experts from institutions like the Culinary Institute of America often explain how temperature control and resting times directly affect tenderness and flavour. Compa’s kitchen clearly applies these professional techniques in real life. The result? A dish that feels restaurant-quality in the best sense of the word-refined yet deeply satisfying.

Service deserves its own mention. Staff were knowledgeable about the wine list and happy to suggest pairings. Western Australia’s wine regions, including Margaret River, are internationally respected, and it’s refreshing to see a local restaurant spotlighting these bottles. When I asked about a particular red blend, the server confidently explained its tasting notes and why it would complement the richness of my pasta. That kind of detail builds trust and shows real expertise.

Reviews online often highlight consistency, and from what I observed, that reputation seems well earned. Tables around me were filled with returning customers greeting staff by name. In the hospitality industry, repeat clientele is one of the strongest indicators of quality. A 2023 industry survey found that over 70% of diners rely on previous positive experiences when choosing where to eat again. Compa appears to benefit from that loyalty, and it’s easy to see why.

There’s also attention to smaller details: thoughtful plating, well-timed courses, and a drinks menu that complements rather than competes with the food. While I didn’t sample dessert on this visit, neighbouring tables raved about a chocolate-based creation that looked as good as it sounded. It’s clear the kitchen doesn’t treat any course as an afterthought.

Of course, like any popular location on Oxford Street, bookings are recommended during peak hours. Parking in Mount Hawthorn can be limited on busy nights, which is something to plan for. Still, those minor logistical considerations are outweighed by the quality of the dining experience.

All in all, Compa delivers on flavour, atmosphere, and service with genuine consistency. From carefully sourced ingredients to knowledgeable staff and a menu that feels both creative and grounded, it’s a standout choice in Mount Hawthorn’s vibrant food scene.

  • I went to Compa tonight and I just had to write this review. Well what can I say...True Italian from the food to the wine to the water to the staff. Don't pass by this place without going in at least trying a "pinsa" pizza. But our group had 8 different dishes of pasta each was to die for.

  • Came as a group of 6 and absolutely loved the food & vibe! Pinsa’s are a must order, base is super light & crispy, primo sale was delicious as were all the pastas and beautifully cooked fish. Can’t wait to return to try the rest of the menu. Highly recommend!

  • Pizza was decent, not up there with the best I've had though. It is quite cheaply priced because one half pizza serves 2. The watermelon spritz was too sweet for me. Service could be improved and wasn't particularly friendly.

  • Fantastic food & experience! Pasta’s were exceptional as were all the starters & the delicious pizza. We will be back soon!

  • 6 of us dined at Compa. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I had the Buccatini pasta with Italian sausage and mushrooms. This was sensational. My friends had the pork belly pasta and crab pasta and were impressed with their meals. We shared the pinsa for entree and loved the light crispy base. Can't wait to try the rest of the menu. The service was impeccable and we were well looked after. After being fans of Birazz over the years, I can truly say you will not be disappointed with Compa.

  • Compa Mt Hawthorn – A Cozy Italian Gem Worth Returning To Tucked away in Mt Hawthorn, Compa delivers the kind of honest, heart-warming Italian food that feels like it’s been passed down through generations. I started with the antipasto plate, a lovely selection of cheeses and cured meats. The quality was spot on—rich, salty, and fresh—though a little more variety spread throughout the dish would’ve elevated it even further. Still, a great start. Next up was the carpaccio, and this one hit the mark. The beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender, balanced perfectly with peppery rocket, shaved parmesan, and a light dressing that tied it all together. For the main, I couldn’t resist the Calabrese pasta with pork, and honestly—it was absolutely to die for. Deep, rustic flavours, beautifully cooked pasta, and a sauce that tasted like it came straight from Nonna’s kitchen. Comfort food perfection. Dessert sealed the experience with a pistachio cheesecake slice that was pure heaven. Creamy, nutty, and just sweet enough.

  • No doubt, the best Italian restaurant in Perth! All the dishes we ordered were absolutely flawless. You can taste the quality of the ingredients in everything we ordered. You can’t go past the zucchini flowers and Involtini Melanzane for entree. The Berry Smash cocktail was exquisite. The service we received was outstanding. Can’t wait to go back for their Pinsa. Well done chefs

  • Loved Compa - went for dinner last night and I’ve already recommended it to 3 people! The food was delicious, service was warm and attentive, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. There are so many dishes on the menu I’d love to try - will definitely be back.
